Hey all…
Got home from work today to see a nice large hole in my computer room ceiling. Leaky roof caused the dry wall to collapse….just a few minutes ago we got a bit of a downpoar…rain is coming in thru a nail hole securing a shingle. It looked like someone turned the faucet on…it’s not just a drip.
Was told the roof was re-done 2 years ago (just bought the house a year ago).
Would you think the rain is getting under a lot of shingles or just a few and finding the nail hole? Cant afford an entire new roof…along with redoing my computer room ceiling now.

One nail won't let that much water in normally. Tells me that there is a section of that roof trapping water instead of letting it flow - or a flashing is missing. WE're going to need pictures to make heads or tails of this beaver damn

Any chance of getting a pic of the roof??
Or at least a description of the roof, including everything above the leak.

Another day, another tool.
The roof style is Architectural or whatever it's called...
Pics are from inside the house. You can see where I tried to seal it the last time it leaked...it's towards the corner of the house and had no room to really see where I was sealing...thought I hit the spot.
The hole in one picture is where the flowing water came from...

trying to resize the pics...sorry so big.
where it probably looks like the nail hold is the problem it's likely that higher up you've got the problem and water maybee runs down the underside of the roof sheating until theres something to act as a drip edge. Is the roof to steep to get onto? how high is the roof in relation to your computer room?(are you closer to the facia or to the ridge? Is there a vent, chimney or anything like that nearby? It kind of looked like there was some nesting type materials in your attic, have birds pulled back flashing or a squirrel. If you've had satelitte t.v installed. the isntallers have been known to be rather reckless in this regard.
I'm having a pest inspector come by...did notice a few black ants that fell to their death when the ceiling caved.
DirecTV is on that side of the house as well but more in the corner and level with the drip about 4 feet away.
I can access the roof...not a bad pitch at all...It's just been raining for the last 10 days and havent been able to get up there. It's an old house (1954) but like I said, they told us the roof was re-done 2 years ago.
House isnt that big and there's nothing really flashy about my roof...Ranch style house...up one side...down the other. Might just re-do the roof myself.
if your shingles are not curling I'd just wait for a break in the rain and run up there with an extra shinge, nail, happer and some tar. It'll be pretty obvious if you never had a problem before this. I can usally find them pretty quick, I'd do it for you if you were withing 20 minutes of my house.
Nick...got a 30 pack in the fridge with your name on it :)
thanks everyone for your help...I'll post what I find when it finally stops raining.
30 pack.. You must live in a much more advanced country than me. All we have is 28's, I don't know what the reasoning behind the two missing beers. Anyways good luck with your dish, while your up there feel around it to make sure the area is still solid providing this is infact the problem. It might not be a bad Idea to flash it a little just a small bent piece of aluminum I shingle up to help divert running water away from this area.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>DirecTV is on that side of the house as well That may be your huckleberry.
Its never too late to be up to date.
