I tore off old siding and put up 2 inch rigid foam and 1/2 cdx. I’m planning on putting up hardy plank – I know you are supposed to nail into studs – this would mean using atleast a 4 inch nail or screw – any suggestions?

You have stud, foam, cdx siding or stud, cdx, foam, siding? Just a quick look at Hardie site leads me to believe it is not recommended either way.

All I can suggest is you come here and ask for advice before you did that.

Thanks for your interest in my question.
I must admit i got over zealous - I had started with one inch foam under 1/2 inch ply on an addition which also has 6 inch walls for fiberglass. Then when I began the old house i had to strip off 2 inches of old board sheathing. So I used 1 1/2 inch foam & 1/2 ply to bump it out to original depth of outside wall. Living in Maine with the oil prices rising I decided more-was-better and all the local lumber yard had was 2 inch foam, so here i am now looking for a reasonable solution.
A lot of my sections are in the 8' length catagory - what if i catch a stud every 32" and add more fasteners in between to the 1/2 ply? I know this isn't the recomended application but i have what i have.
nail to the ply at about 12" centers....
now what did you do to hold the ply on....
how long a nail at what frequency..

I used 4" #10 torx scews directly into studs 16" oc. I screwed about every 2 foot.
double the screw count.. you are going to be holding up some serious wieght...
make sure the heads of the screws are flush to the surface of the ply...
any counter sunk screws need to be redone not just backed off....
now for another fly in the ointment...
those screws ya used...
are they big box deck screws...
if they are and you got them from Homedesperate... sugest you get GRK's and redoing the whole deal...

This is basically a wild and crazy "what the heck" kind of idea, but... maybe nail 2x4's flat onto the cdx over each stud location--nailing through the cdx and foam into the studs (some construction adhesive wouldn't hurt either). That way the new "studs (although they'll be "flat") will be "one" with the sheathing and yet it'll still be the original studs that are carrying the load. Then nail up the fiber cement siding, nailing into the flat 2x4's. Only thing is, your wall will be an extra 1-1/2" thick.
Not so crazy! I had considered something similar using 1" strapping into the studs so that its not as dramatic - but then it does not fit 2x4 requirement. Hmmm
It is not the recommened way to do it, but I would nail it up with extra fasteners. You may even have to use face nails. Be aware, the warentee would be void!
Hello Ramblin Rose. I'm no expert but what about removing the plywood and setting the 2 " foam inbetween the studs and then putting the plywood directly on the studs? I don't know if this if this is worth it or not, just an idea.
Screw it in.....
