I am trying to repair failing stucco on several dormers; trim is rotted, stucco is saturated. I worked with a contractor that hung cement board, taped the joints with fiberglass tape, them skim coated the entire surface.
Does anyone know if this actually works/ will it hold up to Cleveland weather.
Also, I was thinking it would be a good idea to counter-flash behind the cement board and form a drip over the new trim that will be installed at the roof line…

I suspect the problem is that your contractor didn't use an embedded mesh over the cement board. We have used "Dryvit" over a reinforcing mesh embedded in a base coat directly over both cement board and concrete block with good success. Of course, we get a little less moisture in Texas than you do in Cleveland.

Kevin, I plan on doing the work myslef. I am just trying to get a sense of how. I am familiar with Dri-Vit, but not a fan. I do like the idea of embedding a mesh to sturdy things up.
thanks,

I have used the finish coat over cement board trick. I think the Durock site has a detail for it. Used it on my own house 7+ years ago and it has held up fine. Central KY winters are not as severe as Cleveland, but they get pretty severe on occasion.
If you think you need flashing on a certain detail, you probably do.
