Hello all.
I am in the market for a new thickness planer and im hoping to get your thoughts on a new one. I recently blew up my Delta 13″. I could get it fixed but i was never overly impressed with it because i often do 2×6 hardwood in 6-8′ lengths and i get alot of snipe and it is hard on it. Ealier this year i purchased a big General but had a long frusterating time trying to get it to not snipe. the result was it performed no better that the delta so i returned it.
I guess my choices are the DW 735, the ridgid, the 15″ delta thats on a stand or fix my current model.
Whats your thoughts?
thanks and happy new year.

The 20" Powermatic planer is AWESOME!
It will make a mountain of sawdust in minutes.
Not on your list of choices but it should be.
I bought the Ridgid about 5 years ago and have had good luck with it. I don't use it that often but I do find it very user friendly. Blades are disposable and very easy to change. Snipe does occur on the ends but that usually has to do with the improper support of the material. It's good because it is portable and I can take it different jobs.
If you have a little more $$ and a perminent place and room for a thickness planer so it won't be moved around much, I would definately get a heavier shop unit. I had a 15" Rockwell for years when I had my woodshop and it was a real workhorse producing miles of flat satin smooth stock with no chatter or snipe, but it weighed a ton. Look into the Powermatic.
I think you should post this over at Knots. They tend to be more knowledgeable on this subject and not as motly a crew.
I'm assuming you are talking stationary?
Got a Taiwan 15" planer that weighs 800#, does a good job if I keep the blades sharp. Mounted it to a 500 # bench, nice and stable. Bought for $450 USD in 1991 from local importer 'foremost tools', could not find a site for them on the web, may not be in bus. anymore, but the heavier Taiwan tools are actually pretty good. .

Get an old or new Belsaw. Cool thing; I've got Granddad's. Easy to get custom knives made, still from Belsaw. I just put on a cheap HF 5hp "compressor duty" motor, and it will plow through anything. Can fill up the 35 gallon drum at the bottom of my cyclone in a measured 4 minutes.

My new Xmas present to myself...

I am very happy with it...
"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so?
It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.
And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more!â€
“And then the true meaning of Christmas came through, and the Grinch found the strength of ten Grinches plus two. “
Max Rules!!!
Check out the jet.
