I have a client who is building a new home on the site of her old one. In the process of prepping for the new one she had a white pine cut down and band sawed into lumber. Moisture content is now down to 12% for the 600 sq. ft. available for the task at hand. She is wedded to the idea of using the lumber for flooring in part of the house. I have some concerns about the hardness of the floor being sufficient. Density of eastern white pine is 0.37 and woods with a minimum of 0.55 has been recommended to me. What can be done to harden things up. Can it be done with a finish alone or will a hardener of some sort be needed. I was thinking of perhaps an epoxy, followed by a UV inhibiting finish. This woman is not afraid of spending the time it will take for proper prep. Thoughts? Comments?
