Hello bought a spec house (bi-level) 5 years ago. there is an unfinished space between the garage and living area, about 12X28 with two supply vents in the room but no cold air return. I am going to make two rooms out of the space by splitting them in two, so will the new rooms will be approx 12x 14. Anybody see a problem not having or adding returns for each room? By the way the heat/ac is from a heat pump. Thanks for any advice

In most of the situations you describe that I've seen, it was either cold in the winter and/or hot in the summer. Usually these were also the end of the supply line and nothing helps to draw the heat in.

Thanks for the response, but a couple of things
1) The room as is now is very comfortable in the winter and summer
2) Bedrooms are over the garage so both the supply and return continue past the room.
I am having the manager of the hvac contractor that did the install coming next week. Another question do you think I should have pay for the return if they think one is necessary? I would be willing to pay for a second one, since I am the one dividing the room up.

Oftentimes the returns work drawing from another area. When you divide up the space you are further limiting the air movement. If a return is necessary then I would suppose you would be paying for the install.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

A lot depends on how tight the doors are. If there's enough space under the door then the return isn't absolutely necessary.
Where fire control and noise conduction aren't a concern you can alternatively add two return grilles on opposite sides of a wall to connect the room to one that has a return.
