While I wait for the ship to come in so that I can put up a small retirement home, I live in an apartment. It is a long building, frame and stucco, with a low hip roof. The first week I was here, I could have sworn there was an animal or even a man crawling through the attic at night! In the wee hours, I could hear a loud CLUNK-CLUNK, or CRACK!, coming from the building. (There is no one in either adjacent apt.) The bldg id 15 yrs old. If I opened the attic access door in the gangway, I know I’d see a row of trusses.
This is southern Arizona desert country. What I think causes this is the wide range between the day’s high and the night’s low temps. The super-heated framing members contract at night, causing the noise. Since my stay is only temporary (I hope!), and I do not own the place, I can live with some NBS. But if I had just moved into a building I paid for and would be living in indefinitely, I’d be on the phone to the builder to find out what might be done about all the noise. (I doubt he could do much at that point!)
You with those $500K showplaces– Anything going bump in the night?
