noisy flue? changing air speeds
My friend has two furnaces, and they exhaust through 2 inch pvc pipe. It makes a huge whoooshing noise anytime it is on and upsets the neighbors.
I was wondering if I was to change the diameter of the pipe after it exited the building increase to a 3 or 4 inch, would the increase in diameter be enough to reduce the noise?
I was also thinking of extending the pipe and drilling holes in the pipe, like a gutter drain, again the idea being slowing down the air…

Have your friend call the HVAC installer....this problem can be a result of the length and configuration of the intake and exhaust pipes for the heating unit.
The air movement can make the pipes act like the pipes of an organ. There are baffle inserts that can be installed at the furnace blower to modify the air flow pattern to reduce or eliminate the noise production.
