I have recently moved into a house that is very noisy, the noise start usually at the end of the day or early evening. The noise sounds like its coming from the attic space. The house is a Ranch style house from the 60’s, I have looked at the foundation for signs of settling and examined the walls and ceiling no cracks or other signs. I have checked the ventilation in the attic space and have discovered some bad things on the intake side of the vent system, not very many vents in the soffet spaces and someone has put quite a bit of loose insulation over most of the intake vents in the attic. It is my theory that the house is heating up because of the lack of cold air coming in the attic space and that is what is making the rafters creak? It is very loud! Any suggestions?

Aaarrr, scurvy.
Have ye checked the attic fer skeletons, yet ?
Life doesn't often leave a very easy trail to follow.
What does it sound like? Is it different on sunny vs cloudy day? Dark shingles? My office camper is under a metal roof; I can tell when clouds go by just by the roof creaking.
Likely the roof deck moving relative to the rafters. Probably no big deal. Could be squirrels or evil spirits, though.

my old building make tons of noise.... morning and evening mostly... as it heats up and as it cools down... and all my decking and roof rafters are exposed... when i tore off the roof (loft project) i put 4" of foam board on the top side then reroofed 5ply BUR... so you'd thing there was a pretty good break between the black roof surface and the wood that almost talks to you... but... it is an all brick meaning 4 courses no expansion joints in 150ft runs... so... something has to move
i call it character... but anything that heats up and cools down... has to move... gods rule... not mine

I got a metal rof on mine and it will pop as it heats up and pop when it cools down
