I am building a set of hardwood stairs, do not wish to carpet them but am concerned about them being slippery. Open oak treads with poly finish. was thinking about shaking a little silica sand on the last coat of finish before dry. Any ideas

Not necessarily my recommendation, but,,,,,,, a customer of mine had hardwood installed throughout and on the stairs and her dogs were having extreme accidents on the stairs.
She took self adhesive carpet squares and put two per tread. Actually worked and didn't look too bad.

That's exactly what you do. There is fine sand sold for just this purpose.
