I just installed some red oak flooring in my new addition. It butts up next to my existing oak floor. My previous floor was re finished about 7 years ago and is still in good condition. I want to match the finish that was done before. I recall my previous installer stating that he used a Swedish or Danish Oil under the polyurethane finish. But I am not completely sure. I know the polyurethane was oil based since it has some “yellowing”. Does anyone see a problem applying a Danish oil finish before applying the polyurethane. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks,
Ernie

Ernie,
The main thing that you want to find out is if the oil finish is compatable with the polyurethane that you are going to use. If you are going to use Minwax oil poly, use minwax natural or neutral clear stain. I have found that products like Danish oil finish is not compatable with oil polyurethane. The first coat has a difficult time drying out, because the oil seems to exude through. You want a product that you can apply one day, and poly coat the next, then final coat two days after the first. GW
*Hi Greg, Thanks for the advice. It makes good sense. I have used Danish oil on cabinets as the final finsh only and you are right about its properties. I'm glad I asked for other opinions. I'm knew to this forum of information and appreciate your input. Thanks again,Ernie
