Recently a well drilling unit was drilling in a church parking lot close to my home.
They spent 1-2 days and then they packed up and left.
Where they drilled now has a metal cover which is bolted down. The metal cover is about 8″ in dia and says “observation well” and kind of looks like a manhole cover.
What is the purpose of this?
As is was walking my dog I found two more of these on the same city block. They were in the right of way close to a busy city street.

My guess is they're monitoring for groundwater contamination. They can come back periodically and take a sample from the well and test it for whatever it is they're looking for - it could be gasoline from a leaking tank at a gas station, or maybe some solvent spilled from a manufacturing business or even a dry cleaners. By having a number of test wells located throughout the neighborhood they can tell if the contamination is migrating from the source.
There is a service station/car wash on the same block that has been there for many years. Thanks for the info!^^^^^^
