Having grown really tired of sub-par tool bag setups I finally popped for a set of the 8080 OXY LIGHTS framers. Used them today and extremely satisfied, marking tools, hitting tools, square, fasteners, knife all feel in the right place, but, one question!
Why is the tape holder on your right hip? You can’t use the tape and pencil at the same time so why are they both on your right hip?
Have I learned a bad habit of having my tape on the left? I’m right handed so I reach for the tape with my left hand, pull it with my right, then hold with my left and mark with my right hand… (save your holding and pulling, right hand left hand jokes for a little later please… I know they’re on the way…)
I got one of those ‘righty tapes’ from bigfoot but I don’t really get that either…
It still feels clumsy to be passing the tape measure from left to right all the time when everything else just gets pulled out of the bag, used and stuck right back with the same hand.
Anybody use the suspenders with these? I’m 5’8″ and about 155lbs and the bags already feel big, with suspenders I feel a little to ‘outfitted’ if you know what I mean…
?

I been looking at that new "vest" tool bag they have now...I think its going for about $250...looks kinda gay though.

It looks goofy, but think of how YOU look and feel with it on?
I had the Bucket Boss 'builder's rig' air lift" POS last... one step closer to having all I needed with me on the ladder or whatever, but felt like a total clod wearing this great big backpack suspender belt system... Kept the weight off your hips, but in so doing the bags would flop around too easily.
I think the vest might be too hot in the summer. Suspenders only, if they're padded are too hot for me.
?
Looks kinda lame!

Your previous descriptor was more spot on... and the model has his pants hiked up into a high "C" note for sure...
but here, check it out, the tape is on the LEFT in that thing... Why is it on the right in their bags?
Which side do you keep the tape on (if you're right handed?)
My tapes always in my right bag and I am right handed and I never keep it in the tape pocket. I always throw it in the nail bag which is why I most always use a 16' tape. Not too big. I like to just drop it in not have to "fit it in". Maybe I never got used to the tape pocket. I almost always keep my knife in my back right pocket too...and a spare in one of the nail bags. Been using those little fold up knives. They rock!!! and even comes in purple...lol

Not wanting to 'tool up' for everything, I'd always wear a minimal belt, on my left side with fasteners and tape and speed square in there, and keep my knife ( the rainbow colored one, right, for sensitive, new-age carpenters) and pencil in my right side pants utility (carhartt) Pocket.
So that's two who don't use the right-hand tape pocket. We should get one of those surveys going...
although the tape pocket is good for the Tajimi or however you spell it chaulk line I have

I should probably go with the 8086...no tape holder...just extra pockets...hmmm
And the oxy toolchest vests...geezzz...talk about being over outfitted. At that point just hire another guy...and whats with the back and that ring?? You spose' to hang your bat cape from that...lol

We think alike, I thought I wanted the 8086 or 8088 as it had that ONE extra pocket until my tool guy told me it would be about 75$ more as he'd have to special order it from Occidental!?
I went with the in stock bag..
I've got the oxy pro framers- I use the tape holder on the right bag. I'm right handed, by the way.
I see what you're saying about using the tape left handed whenever you're marking something, but I'm still used to having the tape on my right. Maybe it's because I remodel, so I measure existing stuff (tape in my right hand) as much as I measure lumber to cut.
I've got pencils near the front of my bags on each side, and a couple pens in my pocket for backup. I had to put a split ring on my knife, cause it kept sliding down in it's holder too far- now I can just slip a finger into the ring and pull it out. Thanks to someone here for that tip.
I'm not satisfied with chisel storage though. Not quite enough space in either bag for it to ride without the sharp end getting dinged by my pliers.

They make some clip-on tool holders. Seen the pix, have yet to see the real thing. I use that stiff plastic they pack everything in so you have to work to shoplift. With some duct tape, I make slidein chisel pockets to line the bag pocket. Also tried one of copper tube, flattened. Drop the bags and the chisel would take a hike.
Those bags would be really improved with some simple tool pouches on the other wall, inside.
The only torpedo level that will fit them is the slender CheckPoint. Need a wide level pouch on the back end. The ToolBear

I've been planning on making another set of tool slots (like the front ones) in the back of my right bag. I've got some heavy leather scraps floating around, and I could rivet something up without too much trouble. Just haven't done it yet.
Might have to try to rig up some suspenders on mine. I'm 5'10", 147, and my tool belt tends to slide right down unless I cinch it tighter than I'd really like.zak

It can certainly benefit from more slots.

Might just want to buy Oxys. I had years of lesser suspenders and they never did work well.

They must have solved/shrunk the knife holder as I can't jam my knife down far enough out the way yet.
Otherwise, the tape on the right is a very minor thing to get used to in light of how great the rest of the getup is.
Anybody use the suspenders with these? I'm 5'8" and about 155lbs and the bags already feel big, with suspenders I feel a little to 'outfitted' if you know what I mean...
I do. They work very well. They cost like Hell. Pay it. I need them. Without suspenders my belt and pants are half mast.
(Want to feel outfitted, try the Stronghold Adjustable rig. 5-8 and 155 suggests an ectomorph. You slender? Can eat anything and not gain weight, etc.?)
There is a cheaper version for around $50. I have the Full Monty and like them a lot. For years I used the 10$ clip ons. For years I was always tugging at one strap or the other. They never rode right. Then I bought the Oxy suspenders. Problem solved. No more tugging or figgiting.
I bought the accessory suspender loops for belts and have them on all my bag sets (framing, trim, electrical, drywall, phone/cable, utility/mechanical).
The suspenders support them all in turn. AceTools Online is where I deal. Good support. Good selection.
Attached two pot magnets to the offhand strap for screws, nails, small parts, pencils with magnets, etc. Works fine.

Well, I gotcha all beat, I'm 6'3" 380lbs. I wear the 5530 Big Oxy with the 5055 Stronghold Suspension System. I love it. But it does feel like I am outfitted for war. It is very comfortable and most importantly, it stays up. The pencil pockets on the suspenders don't do me much good because on my big shoulders, the pockets start near my ear.

Now I'm going to have to check out Oxy's site...My bags are hand-me down ProFramers from my former boss, which was fine for me. The leather is still strong, but I do like the look of those bags. Just looking at the local lumberyard, I didn't know there was so many options.

Obviously I have some growing to do...
Fine looking set of bags. I have the same suspenders and they really work.
Rather like the Stronghold adjustables. Found leather and framing in the NorthWet did not go well together. Cordura and big brass grommets for drains in the bottom of each bag did.
Notice that that chap from down Tacoma way, Tim Uhler (?) in the current edition of JLC was wearing oilskin pants with bags over. Ah, memories. I now winter in SoCal and have been wokring in shorts and sneakers all winter long.
Never tried to get a pencil in those pockets. I use pot magents on the straps. One has velcro on it and I put velcro on pencils I cut in half. Just slap them up there. Works until you set the bags down, then the pencil comes off. The ToolBear

I'm a halfbreed too (write and eat lefty...most all else righty) Deisel. I always felt like all I did was swap stuff from hand to hand, until I built my own belt.
Just cheap CLC pouches on a wide belt, but now the tape is in the right hand bag, and the pencil in the left, so everything is right.....Plus I've got 4 hammer loops.
I'm a minimalist though, I'm always swapping one bag or the other or a hammer loop off the belt depending on the task.
A medium to large guy named Alan, not an ambiguous female....
NOT that there is anything wrong with that.

Maybe from wearing a tool belt for 30 yrs. I think all people start shrinking at some point.
(Want to feel outfitted, try the Stronghold Adjustable rig. 5-8 and 155 suggests an ectomorph. You slender? Can eat anything and not gain weight, etc.?)
Yep... Not quite slender though-wiry. I've never gained any weight, but for one summer I worked at a lodge in Alaska. Mostly I moved big piles of lumber from here to there... All the staff ate was whatever came in for the guests which was a rotation of Chicken-prime rib-halibut and nothing else. That and cases of Raineer beer (a west coaster would remember the ads "Raaaaaaii-neeeeeer Beeeeeeer" ) that the all mormon staff did not drink...Pretty good fare and I was 170lb when I got back down here after the summer...
Before striking out on my own as a remodeler I worked in bicycles. I was pretty deep into racing (you know, the Lance Armstrong type of racing) and that makes you really really skinny. I was about 140 but also you've got these bulky strong legs from riding so your upper body goes completely to waste. My wife hated it, said I looked like a little boy. Talk about eating though, when I was racing, I could any of y'all big strappin' beer swillin' dirtbags under the table. Always the last one eating, and on the third plate.. In one of those races, often 80 miles or more in 3-5 hours, a rider can burn over 8,000 calories.
Back up to a hefty 155 now swingin the hammer and diggin holes!
Cheers,
Waters
Dude,
tape goes on right side. comes out w/ right hand .
deposits into left hand. pencil comes out. tape pulls right to left. pencil comes from mouth to make mark.
But I know a guy who fell and banged his head and rearranged his nail bags afterwards................ said everything was backwards......hmmmmmmmm
to each his own
Aha!
This assumes making cuts with the long end to your RIGHT, yeah?
I always set up the saw make cuts with the long end to my left so I can see the blade, yeah?
And I will occasionally lose track of my pencil as it is in one of 5 places: ear, hat, under temple of glasses, bag (where it should be) and next to the phone where I left it after that call...
Old boss used to say when asked where _______ was, "If it was up your A$$ you'd know where it was!"
I do it the same way-tape on right, toss to left, pencil in mouth. Onlything is I bite my pencil in the middle, and when they are new sometimesI will move my head and hit stuff with it! I sometimes have a keel holder and keel on it too, that makes it worse. Too old to change now though!
That's my only gripe about my Oxys. I want the tape holder on the left side. I dropped them off at my local shoe repair guy last week while I was dropping off some boots. The guy that does the stitching wasn't there at the time but his mom (family joint) Said that he should be able to swap the tape holder and the pouch from side to side. She said they would call if he couldn't.
Well he didn't. He's a moody prick and his mom said that he had been to the doctor and was having some problems. She said that it wouldn't be a problem if the rivets were drilled out. I guess he wasn't in the mood to remove the rivets. Like I say he's moody. Anyway, I think I'm gonna find another shoe repair guy and float it by them.
By the way Oxy does make them the way we want them. The 5087's they didn't come out until I had already bought mine. And if you have the oxy lites you probably don't want the full leathers.
Here's the ones I have

After talking to you the other day I think I pulled the plug on that brand new Oxy belt they came out with. Besides the fact that it was about $300 with the suspenders I wanted...too many people here complain about how bulky they are in spite of still loving their rig.Soooo..I went back to the other brand I like which is Custom Leather Craft and found this rig that I can get w/shipping for under $100.I kinda dig how they look ...I think. Cept I wonder if its too Tinker Toyish??http://www.clccustomleathercraft.com/products/detail001.asp?partNo=1714
I just need to have enough room to totally tool up and hope there's enough compartments to store individual tools sufficiently. Looks hit or miss...not sure...THENNNNNNNNNN I stumble onto this one...lol..http://www.toolbarn.com/cgi-bin/bigimage.cgi/49-17-0195/
Both are pretty cheap and wonder how dumb that will be to buy...are they disposable's??
I'll tell ya what too...if I were to spend $300 on bags I'd prolly' go with CLC's leather rigs...they look pretty awesome..OY VEY!!!!HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!

You can pick up CLCs at almost any do it yourself center. They seem alright for the price.
I don't trim with those big occys on. I use a lightweight one piece nail apron. THat's all I need for trimming. Way easier to get around with in a finished building.

When I bought my first rig, I had the suspenders. Everything that I could need was in the belt, including a generous supply of nails - 8's, 16's, Joist Hanger, and some roofing. Guess the total weight must have been at least 20 lbs. I was ready, inspired by the guy who was training me. He carried two hammers. Everyone else on the crew carried almost nothing.
Working overhead was too much for the suspenders as I had to raise the tool belt along with my shoulder to get the hammer above my head. By the first afternoon, I had removed the harness and about half of the tools. I carried less nails too. The second day, I wore shorts. Within a week, I switched from my red wings to sneakers.
Life was much easier after that.
You just gotta look a little closer at what you're buying dude. Oxy makes their bags in just about every combination you can imagine. I'm a lefty....my tape is on the right-hand side and my pencil holders are on my left. But I swing a hammer with my right hand first, so my nail loop is also on my right. So I guess I'm kind of a half-breed. :) It took some thinking and digging through the websites, but I ended up with the ideal set-up for me.... and like I said, I'm a weird one when it comes to 'handing'. I write lefty, use a mouse lefty, eat lefty, play a guitar lefty, but then I throw righty, swing a hammer righty, use a saw righty........ makes for an interesting tool bag arrangement. But I didn't have to go custom or anything.
You're wierd!
Jk-- actually my dad is sort of like you. After 25 years painting houses he's pretty well ambidextrous, right handed and golfs left, digs left, shoots right etc.. you know...
And yeah, I did look at the site and see what I thought I wanted, until tool supplier told me the special order bag would be so much more... I figured if they sell so many of this bag--the 8080--it ought to work fine for me.
I think i've just picked up some dumb habits from working so long with one bag on the left.
that very reason (tape holder on left side) is why i purchased the McRose leather bags instead of the occidentals.
that was a few years ago however, i am still nursing along a set of cordura bags from alta industries.
if i am not mistaken McRose will customize, and make it however you want it.
