I’ve just built and install a “box” for a large flat screen tv over a built in sealed gas fireplace.
There is something strange about the insulation. It might be right!
2×6 walls, R13 non-faced fiberglass with a sheet of thermo board (feels and looks like thick card with dull sliver finish) over the top!
Am I missing something? 2×6 walls should have R19, or so I was lead to believe.
Is this right or corner cutting?

Sounds like you have a radiant barrier--to work properly these require about an inch of air space between the barrier and the wallboard. This reduces the depth available for your insulation, so R-13 was used.
The radiant barrier + R-13 may have initially offered higher performance than R-19. Over time the foil gets dusty and its' effectiveness diminishes.
