My MIL’s bathroom sink emits a foul odor, usually after flushing toilet. I have previoulsy replaced the sink trap and noticed that it is on a branch running to the kitchen sink about 15 feet from the stack and the kitchen sink is not vented.
My guess is that this is a venting problem (the tiolet is sucking the water out of the bathroom sink trap. No other problems reported.
Question: We will be doing a full kitchen remodel in another year or two, but in the meantime is there a air gap that can be fitted into 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 PVC DWV pipe? Can I make a dishwasher air gap work here? Or is there some other problem like a restricted main stack vent?

See if your code allows a for Studor vent. Oatey makes a similar one. I've used them for venting an island sink.
I'll see if O can find a link: http://www.plumbingstore.com/autovent.html
Thanks Mongo, that seems to be what I'm looking for.

In the interim, always run water in the sink after flushing. It'll re-fill the sink trap. Maybe wash hands, too? ;-)

Are you sure there is no vent at all? It may be plumbed in an unusual way, and not to code, but it may be there somewhere. Sometimes vents get clogged (animals and so forth). Start from the roof down and check to see that all vents are open.
