Howdy, Need to help out “forgetful” concrete contractor. How far can you offset a through bearing wall supporting 2nd floor joists from main carrying beam in basement ? Some one mis understood where the beam pockets where suppost to go and things won’t line up as they should.

Why use the beam pockets? Why not just make your bearing beam flush and use joist hangers or a 2x2 ledger. Or why not cut the beam pockets out right with a friction saw? You really shouldn't offset your bearing wall above from the beam below. The bearing points and loads should be carried DIRECTLY down to the foundation. If you offset, and the inspector notices, he will not pass it unless you've consulted an engineer, done it his way and have the state-certified stamp to prove it. Or, am I just reading your question wrong?

*Generally you can offset equal to the distance of the depth of floor joists. If it's carrying 2nd floor only, I can't see it being a problem.

If we're talking about a simple interior bearing wall carrying ONLY second FLOOR load, you should be able to offset the center of the bearing wall from the center of the steel beam no more than the depth of the joist without any problems. It's probably worth $100.00 to get an engineer to confirm it though.The Machine
*I had to comment about ofsetting bearing walls by the depth of a joist - First, that doesn't apply to I-joists or floor trusses. Second, I personally don't think it's a good idea anyway. I'd go for moving the beam pockets
*Ron, Sorry, never meant to imply it was OK for web trusses. However, LP I-joists will allow it (according to our truss plant).

*TLE,Depending on the load. For example, we recently framed a house with I-joists that cantilevered 12" the length of the house. The wall sitting on the cant was carrying roof only. 12" I-joists. Truss plant supplies layout and specs joists for the application. We questioned it, they said it's kosher with LPI's specs. I realize floor loads are more, but the 45 degree load transfer rule should still apply. Hey, I could be wrong with the LPI's, but then someone better tell our supplier.
*I-joists themselves aren't designed to transfer the weight. On the outside of a building the timberstrand transfers the weight down to the foundation. But in the middle where there's a beam to transfer to, you have to put squash blocks on each side of each joist.Billy
