Visiting from cookstalk. I have heard recently of several “Oil burner Service Companies” that install a nozzle that is too big to cause the customer to burn more oil. Is this done often and how do you check to see if you’ve been ripped off. Thanks, Rich

Maybe have it checked by an independent?
I have to pay about a hundred or so a year to have a burner tech service mine. But I know some companies that sell the oil provide that service. I worked for one in HS. From what I recall, it would be dangerous and conterproductive for him to do what you describe.

Excellence is its own reward!
You would have to take apart your burner to read the markings on the nozzle. The other way to burn more oil is to raise the pump pressure, which is usually adjustable.

If its too big it would be running "rich" and you would probably see black smoke out the stack. If its adjusted properly then you wouldnt see smoke but perhaps the BTU's input might be exceeding the amount of heat extracted from the system therefor the stack temperature would be excessive. Call a serviceman from a different company if you think something is wrong. The size and angle degree and letter spec. (hollow cone, full, etc) is stamped on the nozzle. Nozzles wear also. I am not an expert but have kept mine running for 25 yrs.
