When attempting to update rooms in my rental property I sometimes repaint light fixtures. I saw today on HGTV where some door hinges and hardware had been repainted w/ an oiled bronze exterior paint. Have never been able to find such a colors in either paint or craft stores. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I found some by accident about a year ago at lowes. It is a Rustoleum spray paint, might have been ... not crackle finish ... but some fancy texture. I wasn't trying to get the oiled bronze or storefront bronze color, but it sure looked like it when the paint dried.

I found it. Hammered finish, dark bronze color. Looks really sharp. I used it to paint a metal handrail, and I was surprised at how good it looked. Maybe I'll become a professional painter ...

Bright brass can get the look with heating to about 600* YMMV, and swabbing with linseed oil as applied with an " Acid" brush, or other short natural bristle. Do not use a poly anything at that heat.
Go up to 800 and above the oil will "skittle" off and not adhere
Again, play it safe, and start out "soft" heat wise, buff after the cooling.@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Never mind..I just reread your post, you want paint..can't help ya w/o a treastise.
Why heat it up, there's a chemical out there that when applied to brass will give it that oiled bronze look almost instantly - did it just this morn on a door stop.

I don't know what the name of the stuff is but I can look Monday - it's a product that's specifically for turning brass a oiled bronze color. I think you buy it at paint stores but I'd have to look to be sure.
Scuff up your brass and dip it into this stuff and almost instantly it turns dark.

I'd a appreciate the info, thanks. I have a client that is looney-tunes over the oiled bronze look. I've had to special order all types of hardware, so if there's a 'magical' way of turning bright brass to the darker variety, I'd be very interested.
Thanks again.

I'll make a note of it and get the name of the product Monday morn.

I'm also interested. One of my brass house numbers went missing and the remaining three are aged to a nice dark color. I tried darkening the new bright brass number with ammonia, but the effect was not quite the same as the older numbers. I also tried the Hammered Bronze paint from Rustoleum and while it looked OK, it was not the look that I wanted.

with the $20 hazardous materials shipping charge, the stuff gets a bit pricey for just a couple of house numbers...
I didnt know that they charged that!
Maybe you can find it locally and avoid some of the hazardous waste fee!
See if they sell it in stores.
Doug
It's a hazardous substance shipping fee. If you read the shipping instructions on the website they say that it is the same amount for a pint as it is for a gallon. And I wasn't sure if that fee included the actual shipping fee or not.
I guess I dont know anything about it(the cost of hazardous waste substance shipping) since the stuff I used was in our paint room and didnt cost me diddly!
Doug
The $20 is independent of the quantity ordered, and in addition to the normal shipping charge.

Never tried it, but I would suspect that you need to remove the lacquer coating before applying the chemical.
I have started dabbling in stained glass, and they sell patina liquids that you brush on the lead to make it look old. I think it reacts with the zinc and/or other alloys more than lead. Anyway, there is a black patina that is very popular, and also a copper one. After the piece is washed clean of flux and crap, you brush it on with a flux brush, and it instantly turns black."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Yes you do! Sand with a sponge sander and then dip or wipe on the chemical and it turns almost instantly. I assume that you could let the pieces of brass sit in lac thinner over night and that'd probably remove it, never tried it though.
