Go to Sears store and check out their yellow colored Johnson brand levels.....look practically identical to Stabila. Vial blocks look identical...very much precision....REGULAR EVERYDAY PRICE...UNDER $50.

Just curious Davo, any experience with them? I know a few people in the current thread re. levels had mentioned them.We currently have a pretty complete set of stabilas & a levelution kit, so we're set for awhile, but I'm curious how the different box beams compare.
I found no difference between the Stabila and the Johnson I mentioned. I own 2 of the 4ft Johnsons. I never owned a Stabila, but I took a new one down off a shelf and set it beside a new Johnson. Both seemed to be built exactly alike. The only difference in looks was the Johnson grab holes were lined with black colored material and the Stabila was red/white ( If memory serves me).
I picked up both levels and held them next to each other...both levels gave the exact same readings.....now I know a cheap level will show level or plumb just like an expensive level, but the difference is the bubble length between the markings.....a very good level will have the bubble juuuuust fit inside these markings....a cheap level will have a lot of room between the bubble and the marks.
The Johnson and the Stabilia both seemed to be made from solid block vials, and both had identical length bubbles and markings. The heft and feel of both seemed about the same to me. The only difference besides the grab holes being a different color were that the Stabila had " made in Austria" printed on it and the Johnson did not. I swear thes 2 levels could very easily have been manufactured from the same plant...perhaps they were. Both instruments were painted the exact same shade of yellow and had the same end tips.
Now Johnson also makes some "lower" grade stuff, but this one compared 100% as an equal match-up. I use these 4ft levels everyday.
I don't own a jamber set...I get by with a couple of 4 footers, a 2 footer, and a 6 footer...as my main levels...course I own torpedoes and such, and a small lazer, but that's another thing altogether.
The reason I mention the jamber set, is cause I very much like the set Stabila offers. My local lumber yard carries all Stabila's stuff and I see and handle it often...but I don't buy...too expensive.
