They are fairly simple machines. Each part disassembles in some way. Like Grant says, figure out the manufacturer and get to work.

The two main failings I know of in older brakes are not holding in the middle and putting scratches on the work.
You can tighten sections separately, mine has wedges. Scratches can be addressed with fine sandpaper.
Before you start any tuning make sure the brake is supported as flat as can be.
Mine is a wedge machine. I think it may have sagged a bit in the middle!
