Hello –
I’m considering blowing in cellulose in my 1950’s era hip-roofed brick ranch, which presently has some sort of Jetson’s type foil bags between the joists. The ceiling material is plaster on board.
I’ve read up on plenty of pros/cons, etc and technical and practical info on installation and other tips.
I have an opportunity here to keep the house fiberglass free and had looked into Owens-Corning’s Miraflex R-25 rolls as an alternative (yes, it’s still fiberglass) until I started researching into cellulose.
I’ve also noticed other encapsulated products, but can’t get any of this stuff in my area (southwest Virginia) without being penalized with a special order surcharge.
Cellulose, on the otherhand, can be had with free blower rental from the local Home Depot or Lowes. (Greenstone product.)
Q-1
Besides sealing cracks and other sources of infiltration into the attic, could the foil bags remain as a vapor retarder/barrier ?
They are covering most of the attic floor surface stapled between the joists.
Q-2
If I consider Miraflex – its wrap is not considered a vapor barrier – could this be laid on top of the foilbags, with the foilbags serving as a vapor barrier ?
Q-3
Same question as Q-2, but with cellulose….
I better stop here.
Thanks for your help !!
Alan
