Was gutting a garage Friday. After ripping down all the plaster and only the insulation left the homeowner pop her head in (always a joy). As she was looking around she pointed out something I have often noticed but never really thought much of before, parts of the fiberglass insulation had turned black over time.
Any of you guys have any thought of what this could be?
I noticed in was mostly around opening, electrical outlets, etc. My first thought is mold, hoping I am wrong. I have noticed this in other houses I have gutting in the past as well.
Thanks in advance for the help guys

Dust, more likely.
Dust is exactly right. While fiberglass is a fairly lousy insulation, it's a great filter. There are air leaks where you found the black insulation. As the air entered the wall (bringing with it gallons of water and completely bypassing any vapor barrier, I might add), the fiberglass filtered the dust and whatever out of the air.

Dust. Fiberglass is a better filter than insulator, and when there's any air movement through a wall or ceiling it will collect dust.
Thats guys that makes pefrect sence. I knew i could count on Breaktime.
