on the cover fhb, face nailing hardi

is anyone doing it like they showed in the magazine? i have to tell ya i pay big bucks for prefinish and come home and see nails everwhere i’m going to the moon.
on all the hardi i’ve done, the nails are all blind nailed and coverd by the next pc with maybe a small siding nail exposed once in a while to hold a pc down under a window or something .
this is how they used to hang the old 12 masonite. larry

I wouldn't face nail prefinished.
But if I was putting it on my own house, I'd go with preprimed, face nail it, caulk with big stretch latex caulk fingered to perfection, and painted w/ my own topcoat. Looks much better than the prepainted stuff, IMO.
I don't like the way prefinished flaps when blind nailed, the color matched caulk doesn't always match, etc. Just my opinion.
I prefer face nailing with an applied top coat.

I just did a job with 6" primed. We blind nailed everything.
But the seams and the corners were never tight.
On the seams one laid flat and the other was out just a bit.
The corners were 5/4 x 4 and when the FC laid next to it, about 1/2 of them were kind of flappy.
So we faced nailed the seams and the corners, then caulked with big stretch.
Then we sprayed 2 coats of SW paint on it.

thats my experence, how come one corner always sticks out a 1/8? if it really shows i stick a nail in it also. larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
Check the hardi instructions.
This has been discussed before. I believe that it depends on the exposure of the laps and also what wind rating is needed in that area.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
I t seems that most people I spoke w/ do not like the prepainted syuff what do you all say i am in the market to side my house soon
thanks
If you look at the photo again you will see he has monkeyed up his rainscreen too. The strapping under the window should be staggered to allow air to move horizontally.
went and took a look.
pretty much defeats the purpose of prefinished.
which ... I'm a fan of.

I used pre stained on my new house ... love it. I blind nailed it (although a friend thought that was incorrect per the mfg). Occasionally had to face nail. The exposed nails are a problem, but overall the job was nice.

I've never been a big fan of FC siding. I was among the first to hang it in the area. I didn't care for the finished look of it.... and only time will tell if it will live up to the hype.
It doesn't give the feel of a well-crafted home like cedar does, for instance.

How abot using 16ga trim nailer to install, 2 nails per stud 1 blind, one exposed?
When I blind nail, the lap is increased to 2" instead of 1 1/4", seems to help a lot.
Every quarter of an inch is critical when blind nailing. The most common mistake that blind nailers make is not getting the nail low enough. On a typical 8 1/4" siding with a 7" reveal, there is 1 1/4" lap. If the nailing is placed at the 1" mark, the siding will be tight. If the nails are placed at the 7/8" mark, the siding will be looser. If the nails are placed at the 3/4" mark, the siding will flap in the breeze. I aimed at the 1" mark and didn't mind if they crept down to the 1 1/8" mark. But...you are right and if you increase anything beyond the 1 1/4" mark, you are money. Its a simple law of physics.
