I need some info on repairing window ledgers that are deeply cracked and weathered. I can’t replace them with out some serious masonry work, so Im wondering if anyone has used the epoxy fillers or any other method and can light my proverbial darkness before I tackle the job.
PS What is the best type of paint for outdoor trim, latex or oil, or ???
Thanks

Marco,
I've done some by first scrubbing with a wire brush to get rid of any crumbly matter, than soak with Minwax Wood hardener--a few good wettings of it one right after the other. Then let harden, then fill with Minwax 2-part epoxy filler.
I've yet to see how long it holds up. I've seen other restoration folks use Abatron with good success, as well as some home-brewed epoxies. The main thing is to really consolidate the wood with some kind of hardener before you fill it. Also, put on enough epoxy that you wind up skim-coating over the entire surface.
Paint wisdom these days is Oil Primer with latex top coat over old stuff, latex/latex over new wood. USe 100% acrylic. Not the cheaper stuff.
