This is an open riser stairway that went in a log cabin. The stringers glued up with three 5/4 by 12 oak boards. The middle 5/4 laminate was knotched inside so as to create pockets for the balusters to be plugged into between the inner and outer 5/4 laminates. The treads are 1.75 inches thick and are mortised into the inside 5/4 laminate. They were then lag bolted through the mortise. The middle and outer 5/4 laminates were then glued and clamped up creating a full 3.25 inch thick stringer with no visible fasteners.

This landing had cantilevered 6 x 6's supporting it inside.
*This dual stairway was an all poplar and painted. The treads on this were carpeted. I mortised the treads into the stringers and pocket screwed them into the mortise.
*same stairway as previous
*Nice, Stan. Very clean lines. Hey, don't you have to comply with the 4" sphere code between those treads? Is there a seperate requirement for that opening?
*Jim: Thanks. We have the 4 inch ball rule here, but presently only for the balustrade. I imagine someday it will apply to treads as well.
*That's hard to believe, huh? Can you imagine the liability issues if some kid fell down between two treads, be awful easy to break a leg? It looked like a couple flights stacked over each other too, geez, that seems REAL dangerous to me.
