Opinions on vinyl clad Merillat cabinets
Customer wants to use Merillat vinyl clad cabinets in new home constuction project. Usually prefer that customers have custom cabs installed, but want to keep them happy.
Customer had them in old house and thinks they held up very well to kids and dogs.
Anyone use this brand and have opinions to share on vinyl clads in general? Also, how does Merillat compare to Kraftmaid, Thomasville, etc. that are available at big box retailers?
Thanks.

Are you sure they are not RTF (Rigid Thermal Foil)? It is applied to MDF. RTF is available in woodgrains and solid colors.Euro-style closet systems use RTF doors and drawer fronts with matching melamine.
Some manufacturers have 5-piece RTF doors with glazied finishes.
live... work.... build... better with wood
After a little research, that is the product they are looking at. We prefer to use custom from a local shop, but customer is pretty insistent. Just don't want there to be problems with heat and water caused delamination -- or any of the quality control issues I turned up when searching other postings.
Have you used Merillat or can recommend a manufacturer with high quality.

I don't know about the vinyl clad but Merillat cabinets are solid but just a basic lower to middle end cabinet. I would say that Kraftmaid, Thomasville, Schrock are middle grade cabinets and Merillat are lower than those. They are made well but with lower grade hinges, drawer slides, etc., pretty much everything you would expect in a less expensive line of cabinets. The little things like matching the wood colors and grains will not be done, the sizes and variety of cabinets and extra's like spice racks, inset doors, etc are not options.
If this is not a real budget job, I would suggest going to a cabinet supplier that carries Merrilat and showing them the differences. For a little more money you'll get more options and a much nicer kitchen. In an upper middle level house, builders in my area may Merillat for the master vanity but use a Schrock, Kraftmaid or better for the kitchen.
I thought Merrillat Kraftmaid and Thomasville are all made by the same company.
The Thomasville line is about on par with Merrillat's Masterpiece line from what I've been told.
It sounds like you're talking about Merrillats Classic line, or maybe Essentials (Their cheepest) line. The Masterpiece line has the options your talking about.
I'd suggest not using Merillat, we had been using their Masterpiece line in a number of projects and their finish quality plane sucks and they are not willing to stand behind their product. Their customer service is a joke.
As long as we are talking about affordable cabinets does anyone know anything about Armstrong cabinets? I was suprized to find out that Armstrong made cabients. The salesmen told me that Armstrong bought Bruce - or maybe it was just their cabinet manafacturing operations - which BTW I didn't know that Bruce made cabinets either....
Bump....
