got a customer that has a stipple finished ceiling in a bedroom where the finish is cracking in a number of places as if it was delaminating
this ceiling was painted a couple of years ago by a professional painter along with the rest of the house
this problem is only in this one room
the home is 30 yrs old & i am wondering if the origional paint was oil base and the new paint is probally latex and he should of used a proper primer first
the next question is what does one have to do now as in does it require all the stipple be removed then properly repainted then re stippled or what ?

By stipple finished, you mean that there's an actual texture? If that's the case, I would suspect that it's there for a reason - perhaps to hide cracks in the underlying surface.
If you mean a faux finish, then it's just paint and the cracking/delaminating shouldn't be related to the finish style. Latex over oil without a primer should be fine. I suppose it's possible that the faux finish was applied with incompatble paints/glazes, but that just doesn't seem likely.
I guess I don't really understand what "the finish is cracking in a number of places as if it was delaminating" actually means.
ceilings here usually are painted then a textured finish is sprayed on using a air compressor and a hopper filled with the textured finish material
the ceiling in question is the only one in the house doing this
the cracks look like clay drying in thje sun and the resulting apperance
Thirty years ago would be 1978. By that time, nearly everyone was using latex wall paints. Is it possible that the ceiling was wallpapered at one time? Paint won't stay stuck to wallpaper glue.

plenty of oilbase paint used here 30 years ago
I don't know if they were still painting ceilings with Calcimine then but check this out:

grab 6 sheets of 1/2 rock and fix it for good. i hate fighting ceilings. if they look nasty i just cover over them and go on. larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
