Does anyone know what the origin of the word Wainscot is? I hear it said and spelled so many different ways: Wainescote. wainscoat wainscott and the way I spelled it above. I thought for a while it was the name of someone who came up with the design. Then I saw there was a county or town or something in England named this I thought maybe it came from there. I’ve always been curious, have searched etymology sites on the web and asked carpy’s, designers and archetects and have not yet recieved a definitive answer. Any thoughts? See I spelled it differently in the post heading than I did in my text

I found this:
"When it first entered English around 1352, "wainscot" referred to a particular kind of fine oak wood imported from Russia, Germany or Holland, which was used for furniture as well as for paneling. But its original use was probably in wagon and coach building, as evidenced by its apparent root, the Dutch or Flemish "waghenscote," from "wagen" (wagon) plus "scote" or "scot" meaning "partition."

You know now that you print that I remember seeing that before and the waghenscote explanation then I didn't want to buy but now I guess if our Wainescot reminded someone of a wagon partition so be it. Not what I wanted to hear but plausible non the less thanks. Like "Oh that panel that comes part way up your wall. Reminds me of something. Its Its ah Waghenscote!" And believe me the Germans coming out in me now there's spit all over the screen.
Yeah, it is a umluute kinda thing..I wish I could spell it.
