OSB: Nails or Staples for Roof Decking?
I was looking over a “Tuff Shed” two-story building with a Gambrel roof. I noticed that the roof decking was OSB and in several places I saw it was attached with 1/2″X 2″ staples that missed the rafters….
It made me wonder what is really best to attach roof decking?
Thanks,
Bill

Okay I'll bite.
IMO staples are better, only because at the pressure I use nails penetrate too deeply.
In any area except where significant sheer forces are involved, i'd go with staples, but at 3" OC minimum.
Just try it. staple the sh*t some ply and nail equaly then try to pull apart. use your own judgement after that.
I've nailed plywood to a fake frame and stapled also then took a sledge to the frame and the nailes ply showed more movement. I lost a bet on that count...........
HMMMMM............. makes me wonder what the codewriters have tested ... on an 8' sheet in one stud where the ply breaks 4" oc = 64 nails with a .12 diameter shank in a 8' x 1.5" area ............. splitsville like me an my X
You are right. Best is to hit the rafter
