Got to wondering if there might be any folk here who invest in bulk purchases of building commodities like osb.
Thinking back when it was like $5 something a sheet for 7/16 just a couple years back. Didn't take too awful long after that before it was topping out just under $20 a sheet.
That ain't hay. A few pallets under cover and you get to go buy a Woodmizer.
OSB was $10.98 Saturday. Today it's back up to $12.99.
Where you at Ralph, you have nothing in your profile.
just a little side note to buying in bulk. had a friend about 10 yrs ago think a hurricane was going to hit florida so he and a partner bought plywood futures on the stock market. bigger than heck florida gets hit, plywood goes through the roof futures go up everythings looking good. some miscommunication on who was to put a sell order in. plywood goes back down in a few weeks. they get a call from the commondity broker that there times is here to pay [whatever thats called] they end up with a trainload of ply and end up running all over to farm auctions and the like selling plywood!took them about 6 months to unload. i don't think they play in futures anymore.lol larry
Ha! Roarin' good story.
Those damn miscommunications!

Matt
I'd be willing to bet that the commodity broker made a handsome profit by NOT calling him when the time was right!
How about 3/4 t&g prices?
we dont use osb so I don't pay attention, But I AM in need of some decking for my shop floor.
Advantech is 29.99 and 3/4 pine sturdi floor is 26.99

ROAR! T! You the man! You the man!
I just called , just for you . My price is 10.18 today and I would imagine they would take a 10.00 offer on a bundle . Thats put on the job with 30 days credit, not blows cash and carry price. I could buy it cheaper from blowes on a PR account deliverd and cheaper yet cash and carry. Dont know how much cheaper. If we were talking about an 18 wheeler load dropped at a storage facility , who knows? I would have done that for 1cent per sg ft when I ran a lumber yard. .32 per sheet over cost set off a truck on a full load. I sold several direct loads to big projects , but I needed to see the green. I sold a lot of direct loads of drywall since they only carry 552- 12s . A big four plex will just about eat that up. An 8 plex will swallow it whole and ask for more. Two good size houses will take a truck load. But we are talkin about OSB. I ran cash and carry sales on truck loads and sold a load in a week. You could do the same. A friend of mine that is a contractor was telling me yesterday that he is planning on buying a truck load in January if it hits 6.00. He told me that yesterday.
Tim Mooney
Thanks Tim,
Ya know, I've been thinking. I do that on occasion.
Involving the recent discussions over lower grade plumbing components for the bigboxes although from outside appearances at first they look the same.
Well, what if.
I mean Depo and Lowes are such powerful vendors. What if they tried the walmart style pressure on the osb manu's to force them lower the price.
I'm wondering if they could dogdown on the materials, processes or something, and in the process, still meet the specs, but yet still be an inferior grade in comparison?
Do you think that is in the range of possibility?

If I understood it right , yer talkin about selling below standard material for cheaper and flooding the market with it , thus causing the good stuff to drop?
If thats what you meant;
Walmart has already proved it by driving vendors down as you mentioned. Plus not paying them for 90 days out . Walmart did start in Arkansas by the way and Sam lived in Conway. Home office to day is in Fayettville.
I think the other two you mentioned are already working on it . The plumbing fixtures are a good example. Cabinets are another. Tile can be bought in seconds cheaper from them than anyone. They dont admit they are seconds , but they are if you have layed much of it .
Good builders buy good material , bottom line. Our contractors only want OSB Northern board, not Southern. USG rock, 1rst line studs always. They will trade with "the other yard " , if they have better studs. Things like rebar and blocks dont get their attention except for price.
The general public will pay for junk if they cant see the difference. Weekenders , home owners , etc, would swallow your idea whole. Walmart proved it. Rez, I dont know for sure , but I think they are working on it .
Tim Mooney
Our contractors only want OSB Northern board, not Southern.
Could you elaborate on those terms Northern and Southern and how are they identifiable?
Thanks

Houston TX $12.53 for CDX....so about $9.55?Scribe once, cut once!
Thats the way they are listed, OSBN and OSBS on their print out . Southern board is soft pine and Northern board is hardwood mix. N, is darker board. The Northern board is stronger and sells a little higher generally. There was a long time that they were #### for tat on price untill the favortism showed up. Blowes and depot always have Southern on hand at our local yards. Of course Southern Pine is native in this state and I live in the middle of it all. Ozark National forrest to the North of this river valley and Quaita National to the South of it. All yellow pine .
The others here may not have a choice as I dont figgure they would ship Southern very far if Northern was available closer..... .
If there is a price difference as there usually is , we use Northern board on roofs and Southern on walls.
Tim Mooney
northeast Ohio up to $10.25 for 7/16.
Going back up here, $12.67 today @ the Depot for 7/16" Hope it does'not shoot back past $20.

Speaking of price fluctuations, what makes lumber prices do that? Is there a certain time of the year when its best to purchase lumber? Summer cheaper? Shipping? What is it?

Sheet goods and lumber have different market forces acting on them so the two do not always move in the same direction.

January 16, 2005 Boise, Idaho:
7/16 OSB
$11.79 at Lowe's
$12.75 at HD
$13.58 at BMC West (and about the same at Franklin Lumber...a local chain)
I'm surprised either Lowe's hasn't raised their price, or HD lowered its.....
I noticed this difference about a week ago and since I was planning on buying some for a shop I'm building this summer, and got HD to do their "price match" and they then also give you 10% off.....so I ended up with a $10.61 a sheet price.
The sales clerk was surprised when I said I wanted 140 sheets.........but they honored the price match.
i tried the price match thing at hd, but all they would do was match lowes,so i told them i'd just go to the guy that had the lowest price first and walked. i figured they would go ahead and knock 10% off,but i hit the door and went to lowes. larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
I had printed out a copy of their low price guarantee from their web site just in case they complained about...their official policy is at this link:
http://www.homedepot.com/HDUS/EN_US/corporate/about/our_products.shtml
Reads as follows:
What is your low price guarantee? The Home Depot guarantees low prices on everything we carry. If you should find a lower price from a legitimate, local competitor on an identical item we stock, even if it's an "advertised special," we'll not only meet that price, we'll beat it by 10% to thank you for bringing it to our attention. To receive your discount, please contact your local Home Depot. (This guarantee excludes closeouts, liquidations, and clearance items). If you find a lower price from a competitor on the Internet on an identical item we stock, please print the product/item page (including applicable taxes and shipping) and take it to your local Home Depot for verification. We'll be glad to match the Internet price. (This guarantee excludes closeouts, liquidations, and clearance items).
i'll print that and keep it in my billfold for next time. they told me it didn't apply to "market price items" i love playing these two against each other, i was buying a nail gun and hd was ???.99 and lowes was ???.98 so i hit home depot and told them they was higher,no questions they knocked 10% off. bottom line i did as well as i could and they made money on a sell. larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
Isn't virtually everything a "market price item?" I suppose if they really wanted to weasel, they could say Lowe's carries OSB from mill XXX, and HD only carries OSB from mill YYY, and thus it isn't "identical."
Actually, I think a lot of chains do something similar in that they are single-retail outlets for certain model numbers of a particular product. The same product may be made for other retailers, but they put a different model number on it and include (or delete) an extra package of giblets and then call it "not identical" precisely to avoid having to pay out on the guarantee....

how close to you live to Calvin? Or Joyce?
Tim Mooney
Calvin's on the other side of the state and if joyce is Pi probably an hour or two.
Price is going back up here, $13.87 today @ HD for the 7/16"
$12.25 two days back at the bigboxes."Live Free, not Die"
$15.37 today @ the Depot, up 10% in about ten days for the 7/16" 3/4 was $24.99
I guess the day's of getting it for $3.49/sheet for 7/16" and $10.49/sheet for 3/4" are long gone. Same as $1.49/sheet for 1/2" drywall. And that was only two years ago, at least for the OSB, seven for the gyp.

If it goes to $6 I'm loading up.
HD in Minneapolis $9.95
memphis homer despot $10.88
9.99 is not a bad price for retail. we just bought 4 truck loads for 230.00 per thousand not including freight. when you add freight you have to sell a lot to make money at 9.99.
I don't see the price going down to much more. if it hits in the 8.00 to 9.00 I would buy all you can afford or use, that will probably be the lowest price we will see.
