My 2 bunks at 9.99 ea. are going on my current job.
I'M NOT BUYING AHEAD EVER AGAIN!!
That would be my luck on a spec house, too. My new motto: Buy High, Sell Low.

Friggin' luck of the draw sometimes.
With a 10% discount that's less than $5 a sheet even after taxes. Well, close.
How long has it been since we've seen prices like that? 10years?
be wondering what's going on...
what's going onnn
Edited 1/25/2007 9:46 pm ET by rez
Nope..... 3 years....2004 $5.55/sht
hmmm, must mean something when it seems that long.
be is it Friday yet?
Big Blue has them in this morning's paper (Oregonian) here for $4.99
my guess, hurricane buying for is over for the season, govt. isn't
building in Iraq, and latest figure show home starts down a lot.
Good time to be buying , but I just built my new shop last fall when it was $9.00
$4.99 aye?
That means it still has room to drop here then.
Gentlemen, place yer bets.
How far will it drop before it bottoms out and begins the crawl up again?
$4.99 in southern ohio and northern kentucky i say it goes to $3.64 then will start to climb.
Nope, Nope, Nope!
Not going to touch it until it tops $8 again.
Buy high, sell low.
Ralph,
you just hope it does so you don't feel like such a sucker for paying to much for
over stock.
Shortly after I got my good deal of $9.99 per sheet the price jumped a couple of times and ended up at $16.99. That was at Lowe's.
My regular yard was selling for a buck more and some places, not in my area, were getting about $20.
I quoted the job using $13 as my base price because I fully expected to see $12.99 as the price when I originally planned to buy.
I'm usually booked about 9-12 months out so it's a crap shoot when quoting jobs. I don't think anyone was prepared for the wild swing in certain commodity prices and grinning and bearing it was the order of the day.
I didn't lose any money on the deal so it doesn't really matter that the price has plummetted. If I were quoting at todays prices using my standard markup I would be down about .20 cents a board.
It's fun to grouse a little about prices but the only thing that would have happened if I bought at todays prices was the customer might have been quoted about $500 less.
I forgot to update the local OSB price a week ago. It's still the same this week!
$4.98 per.
You know I'll need some when it hits $8 or higher again.

Local Lowes here finally caught up to lowering to $4.98. After talking with the managers there I found out it has to do with whatever main office a particular Lowes operates under by demographics.
So then I get into a conversation over quality of OSB varying by manufacture which normally in bigboxes means GP blue Georgia Pacific or LP orange Loiusianna Pacific.
Most liked GP as there were claims that LP had a greater tendency to begin flaking when around high humidity. I don't know. Good opportunity for an experiment since I bought some of both.
I recall a post here in the past by I think TimMooney which mentioned the better attributes of northern osb as opposed to southern manufacturers in that southern mills used more soft woods in the manufacture than the northern mills which used a greater amount of hardwoods.
Makes sense to me. One good reason if not the only for living in the northlands.

is it Saturday yet?
Look at this:

Do I take a chance and stock up, again, or just ride it out?
My wife will kill me if I put any more in the dining room.<G>
oh man, thanks for that link but there goes all my mad money.
Been planning to buy a bunk but where to store and haul it has been a question.
I'm thinking in what little thought processes I carry that pricing isn't going to go any lower and the question now is will it stay level or creep up.
Decisions decisions.
be let's see the 10% first use of the bigbox card and the bulk purchase discount...hmmm....lets shoot for 20% $4.98at20%=$3.99with.08tax=$4.31 a sheet. Somebody go tell BobK:o)
is it Saturday yet?
i know al about the 10 off coupons, but what is this bulk discount. am i just a sucker at the cash registar?larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
I made a stop at the HomeTeacup the other day after the thread about extension cords and seeking that $10.89 special multisocket thing but it was a no go.
While there I saw flyers all around the store saying see the front desk about about some bulk purchase pricing thing.
Seeing they are hurting right now maybe it's some special deal trying to bring in sales, I dunno.
be a uno dunno
is it Saturday yet?
back up to $5.98 today.
be slip slidin' away
Yep, HD was up to $5.98 yesterday. Once again, opportunity and need do not coincide.

Just got the Lowes flyer and they are at $4.88.
be I should...
every court needs a jester
Walked into LOWES yesterday and the price was 4.88 (had been 5.99) so instead of picking up the couple sheets I needed, I got 10.
No fair!!!... hording valuable commodities!!!Wars of nations are fought to change maps.
But wars of poverty are fought to map change.
Old Guy,
For that price I can go to my local sawmill and get maple.
32 SF of 1/2" maple?
Wish I had that mill down the street.
Wait, I did.

Ralph Wicklund,
NO, one inch thick.. my cost would be half that for 1/2 inch thick, well wait,, anything less than an inch thick they give me for $20.00 a truck load.. that's about the same as 40 sheets of 1/2 OSB.
The last I had sawn cost me .18/bf. That works out to 5.76 / 32 sq ft.
Of course that was 1" thick.
Edited 3/24/2007 8:31 pm ET by OldGuy
oldguy,
Soft or hard maple? for 18cents?
pallet mills pay 15 cents a bd.ft. around here for 4/4
That was the price of having my own logs milled. Any hardwood or softwood. Last year I paid .22 at a local mill for white pine rough cut. Unfortunately we have no white pine on this property.
Went cruisin' thru the neighbor borgs today.
Bluebox had GeorgiaPacific's 7/16 osb as some special 3 day sale deal at $5.79.
Went down the street to the HomeTeacup and the exact same thing was a normal priced $5.29.

yep,
but I don't want to have a stack of the stuff sitting around.

The price here has held steady at $5.88 at both places. They keep track of each others pricing very well. Not often do you get to take advantage of the 10% off the matched price.
They also get around giving that deal by claiming the product must be an exact match, which means same manufacturer, not just same product.
FWIW, GP is sized for spacing, while that other brand (CRS), starts with an L, is not and could be as much as 1/8th over to boot.
4.99 at hd today.thats in kansas larryhand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
Holy cow!
That price is from back in the golden age of material prices.
I wonder if it could possibly go cheaper?Who knows but if men constructed their dwellings with their own hands, and provided food for themselves and families simply and honestly enough, the poetic faculty would be universally developed, as birds universally sing when they are so engaged?-Thoreau's Walden
It's a crying shame we're not in Kansas, Toto.
If I wanted to broach the match price plus 10% thing then we're in the same neighborhood.
Something must be happening to me, I don't have that urge to go wheel-deal for a bargain much anymore.
be losing my jazzWho knows but if men constructed their dwellings with their own hands, and provided food for themselves and families simply and honestly enough, the poetic faculty would be universally developed, as birds universally sing when they are so engaged?-Thoreau's Walden
oh i'm sure it could go to 2.99 a sheet if i just went out and bought a couple bunks at 4.99 and stacked them on the 200 sheets at 7.39 [i wonderd how it could go any cheaper coming down from 16.00 a sheet].
if you need some let me know i'll go buy a bunch at5 bucks so that next week you can get yours cheaper!!!!!!larry
i have the same gift as well in the stock market ,in case you need some advice.hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
That sounds like a stockmarket move buying more at a lower price as it waters down the higher price paid so it doesn't sound so bad. heh heh
Thing is then you have all those shares.
Sounds like time to build a shed. ROAR!

What about 1/2 drywall.
It seems to have actually gone up some, $8 -$9. (not that I look forward to buying any)
Will we see it down to $3 to $4 again like osb?
Well, Guess I have to learn how to do THAT, now!
Still under $6 a sheet.
Think it'll bottom lower?
Only if I buy it now for a future job...
Ralph, was in the bigbox today with a $10 off a $25 purchase. Truck was empty so I thought what the hey.
Ended up $3.97 a sheet.
might be time to buy.

Thanks for the reminder. I have one of those cards sitting on my desk. Expires on the 30th.
Time to stock up on digital multimeters. Harbor freight has theirs on sale for $1.99 - limit 10 - reg. $9.99
Steady at $5.22.
Buy a bunk and you can prob work a good deal.
be a good deal.
Peach full,easy feelin'.
all prices may be going lower. the new house market hasn't risen yet. I bet it will go under5.
ya, don't know how it can get much lower than the 4.50 or so pricing tho'. Reminds me of the golden years. Hard to believe I saw the 7/16 at $18 a sheet once.
Maybe it was earlier in this thread where posters were discussing osb plant closings and shift eliminations.
Makes me think the distributors are running solely from storage overstock supplies.
Peach full,easy feelin'.
can't tell for sure. If I was inclined to build a house, I think this year might be a good time.
I know it wasn't in this thread but, my brother just tore down his old house, sold of everything he could, last I knew he was over 20k.
I think we may be close to the bottom in osb prices. 4.5 pretty cheap. makes me want to buy a truckload and I don't have any use for it.
Talk to Ralph, he's itching to pull the trigger.
Can't see how he missed .19 a case of clips tho'.
Peach full,easy feelin'.
Actually I just looked at those bids I was talking about a few posts up. $4.35!!!
nice!!!!!
Like I said in another thread though... I think the lumber guys are takin it on the chin...
I'll have to get those bids out again and see if I can find some old bids or invoices and compair 2x4 studs, long 2x4s ex10s etc.... That will tell the real story...

Got to wondering why the high pricing all of a sudden?

I did tell the folks at the Pro-desk about this price. If there are any good prices out there my store will match them for me.
If they do it here then finding and posting good prices from where ever in the U.S. could be good for all of us when negotiating the sale.
So what price is it going to be needed before you pull the trigger?

OSB is up to $6.44 as of yesterday. Looks like it's almost time to buy.
Just checked at the neighbor Lowes the other day and it was $4.97.
Guess I better go get a bunk and crawl over it for the next year or two.
$5.47 Minneapolis Home Depot today
You guys are pricing 7/16 if I remember correctly
1/2 is $6.72
HD Cedar City UT has been $6.50 for months, went to $7.50 last week.

ya, always 7/16 as a base.
Kinda like the old days saying gas is at $.79 today when premium will cost you $1.01.
"be a silly millimeter longer"
Lowe's osb now $6.94. Only $1.06 more and I can buy at $8.
Best be ready then.
Could go up to $12 at the bat of an eye.
be or $5
i have a little farther to go than that,my 150 sheets in the barn cost 7.25. plus you have to add in the stumbling ariound factor :] if a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?

dang that hurts.
Does Lowe's in your area have contractor appreciation days?
Mine is this week, Wed - Fri, with coffee and donuts each day and free lunch on Friday. We're going camping Friday so I miss the free lunch. The girl at the Pro desk always calls to remind me. It's a cheap date - for me and my wife.
Same days here but I'm in there so much it's pretty uneventful.
And not sure I want to rub elbows with some of the yahoos I see buying stuff in there.

OSB $4.74
No lie? dang!
Buddy was just talking about getting two bunks for a pole barn.
Told him make sure to get 10% knocked off the price.
That was yesterday and it was $5.34.
But that's down there in Florida where you don't get any hardwoods thrown in the mix like up here with the Canada imports.
$4.44 Sandusky Ohio Lowes and Menards. Home Depot $5.94? So after "meet and beat" only $4 a sheet
One more thing.
A homebuilder in syracuse, took my advise when the osb prices were sorring, bought 5 truckloads from hd, after checking low, they gave it to him at 10% off low price. This isn't the end of story.
He sold 4 trucks to 84 lum. at $1 more a sheet. He kind of pissed me off, he didn't even offer me a dime. Oh well, he did offer me a job.
$4.65 at Lowes today.
larry b
there it is, the price to buy at. I think we have a winner!!!
I wonder if Lowe's will beat their own prices?
It's almost time for me to buy for the next job. My luck it will jump to $10 the moment I walk through the door.
Today it was $4.98 at my Lowe's.
I missed a good deal a short while ago. They were closing out Simpson 5/8" plyclips at .19 per case. That's 250 pieces per case.
Similar pricing here in NC in the retail store. - four seventy-something.
I just got some framing bids (at work). I'll have to check out what that pricing is. I might have to have a talk with my lumber salesmen about Lowes prices. I bet that will be well received... ;-) Actually I wouldn't mention Lowes. I noticed that I sent out E-mail solicitations for bids Monday morning and had 3 by lunch. Two years ago it would have taken 2 weeks...
We do the same dance every time. The summary: I get the pricing - usually multiple house packages. Usually 2 or 3 yards. I talk to my preferred yard and say "is this the best you can do" - "I can get it cheaper somewhere else". He says: "Don't know, let me check with..." (some other guy). He comes back with a number maybe 2 or 3 percent less and beats the competition by $50. I buy and know I've done my job.... I occasionally throw a coupla sheet rock orders, etc to the other guys to keep them bidding on my stuff. Yesterday one asked me how the bids looked and offered me sports tickets. Not one of my teams though...
$6.44 at HD here last week, I didn't notice yesterday when I walked by. Cedar City Utah.
I was in EL Paso 2 weeks ago - it was $6.80 at HD there.

That's what I thought. How much lower can those prices go?
