I would like to build an outdoor firepit using some leftover split-face stone used on the house. I assume I would have to line the inside with typical refractory brick. Does anyone have any or know of a source for ideas on design and specs?

That's what the cops keep trying to tell me?
I live in the city ... there's a urban legend that ya can't firepit ... but ya can "cook out" ...
So I keep a hotdog on a stick at the ready .. for when the cops pull drive down the alley .... most of them fall for that legend too .... other times they just look at me like I'm some kinda idiot with cold hotdog on a stick ... and say not to put any more logs on the barbie. Which we do right after the taillights disappear ......

Fire pits can be as easy as putting river rock in a circle around a sand filled hole in the ground or as complex as vented firebrick and mortared stone.......
We were just talking about a couple in the photo gallery........

I'm sure you can find books on the subject...........
Whatever you do, blow the burning marshmallow out, don't wave your stick back and forth to put out the fire............It inevitably lands in someone's hair......

Here is my firepit, built a few years ago when I was re-doing the backyard. This was my first attempt at laying block. I used a split face brick and lined it with refractory bricks. I had a retaining wall surrounding half of it to provide some seating. Kids love it for pool parties, well worth the time and it makes for less grass to mow!
