My eyes are bleary from searching the internet. Have any of you seen a fireplace that meets the following:
* suitable for outdoors, as part of a partially covered patio
* wide open opening–180 to 270 degrees–to make it easy to sit around and still see fire
* southwestern style (kinda like the Kiva from www.adobelite.com, but more open firebox)
* wood burning
Thanks.

Will it require a chimney?
Of the remaining 90-180 degees that is not open to the human absorbers of radiant heat....does it need to be masonary or metal or...?
Does this "fireplace" need to be movable?
What are your thoughts on the materials with which you wish to build ?
The e-mail address would not work for me.....is it correct? or did I goof?

I've received emails from a bunch of others here, so it works in part at least. [email protected]
Yes to chimney. It'll be built at the edge of an opening in a concrete dome, can attach to that about 8' off the ground, and then go up enough to meet code (probably the 2' above 10' over rule).
Not moveable. Finish is likely to be a sculpted stucco, so a metal form that can be covered w/ expanded metal lathe and stuccoed, or...or....or....
Certainly a custom masonry unit is viable, but maybe there's better... Love to hear your ideas. Thanks!
Looking for flaws in this idea...
We can create a form for the chimney that is integral to and suspended from the concrete dome. Something like a Sonatube wrapped in rebar/diamond mesh. Spray the whole thing with a coupla inches of ~4000 psi shotcrete to create a flared hood suspended, say, 4' off the ground. Remove the tube. Create a fire pit out of concrete, maybe giving it a brick hearth. Don't need damper be/c this is all outside. Not worried about engineering for the weight--that's covered. Mostly not sure about how it'd handle the flames and heat. I know that mortars are used in fireplaces (duh!), but an entire chimney? I know how to create the desired look, but I don't know about the fireplace mechanics.
Goal is an outside fp with 360 viewing. Any simple adjustments to this idea to make it viable while keeping the basic appearance?
In our fair berg, the outdoor fireplace fad has run amok, such that one can't have a window open without the house filling with smoke from next door. An ordinance is being prepared to deal with this plague.
This guy is surrounded by more than 40 acres of his own nothing, so shouldn't be an issue.
