Guys,
I’m building an outdoor islands (with grill, sink, fridge). Tile counter with stone veneer sides. Any thoughts as to which materials are best for the structure? (other than masonry/block). I’ve seen plans that call for metal studs with backerboard substrate, PT studs with exterior plywood substrate for the stone, etc. This will be fully exposed to sun/rain/snow. I live in NJ.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I just did this same job this spring. Two islands about grill height. I made them freestanding, pt 2x4 frames, 1/2"pt ply sides, 3/4" pt ply top. Then I covered all with concrete backer board. Tile guy was very pleased with solid surface to tile over, homeowner was pleased with final result.
That's perfect. So you used tile, not stone veneer on the sides?
Porcelin tile on all surfaces, and epoxy grout I think. I have never used the grout before, and I didn't want to try on this.
Skip the tile and have your fancy ceement guy come back and pour a matching countertop. You won't get a better harmony in the design.
Greetings.
Some folks can't open files that size. This link may help.
Cheers

Man, that is one redneck island. Didn't even seal the joints."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

I've been called redneck before, it makes me grin, and my wife cringe. The tile guy did all the joints when he tiled. I don't know much about tile, this guy is really good. I need to learn how to do tile, I feel like I give away a lot of work this way, but those guys need to work too.
I was being sarcastic. You described a nice island, and the picture showed nailed-on hardiebacker."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Must be nice to live where they offer high speed connections and 1500 kb photos don't take five minutes to download, Hint, hint. ;)
Yeah, sorry about the file size, I don't even think about it anymore. We complain because our dsl is too slow.
We saw a commercial for Hughes- net the other day with the modem handshake sound, and the kids wondered what was that noise. Time flies I guess. They haven't hear of a dial telephone either.
Halloween is the worst time for us. All our friends clog our email with pictures of their terminally cute kids dressed up as some sort of animals.
I did look at the pic. Nice work.
Thought you might be able to help here
Whatever. Just pick a color that doesn't clash with bird poo.
I'm on Long Island and here's how I did one for a customer last summer
