I posted a thread a while back inquiring about building outdoor kitchens. I am just finishing up my project. The finish coat product that I am using over the hardibacker is completely awesome.
It is called Dryvit, an acrylic based product. I am using Freestyle, which is for a smooth finish. It comes in over a hundred different colors. I used a drywall pan and knives to put it on.
I taped and used thinset over all the joints, and then putty coated the hardibacker with thinset. I used an orbital sander with 120 grit paper and got the finish very smooth. You need to let the substrate cure for a couple of weeks. Imperfections in the substrate will telegragh through the Dryvit Freestyle.
It is best to apply it in the morning while it is cool as the product sets up rapidly when it is warm. It comes in 5 gallon buckets, and you add the colorant to the material and use a paint mixer to mix it to a uniform color.
The color in the brochure was the color we got, it was finng awesome.
Extremely easy to put on, drywall skills help. I highly recommend this product over any one coat stucco products. Their color selection is super limited.

Please don't take this the wrong way. I am interested in the product based on what you have said, but wouldn't it be a good idea to see how it holds up for a season before giving such an enthusiastic endorsement?
To use the analogy of Tool reviews. The criticism here has been that it is one thing to like it right out of the box, another after two years.
To use the analogy of dating a woman...
Sounds like a fun project. How about some photos? Roger
Sorry it took so long, but thanks for asking. This is my first time with photos so I apologize in advance if there is a problem. Hopefully the dryvit finish is somewhat visible, the color selection is fantastic.
Nice tile job, looks like a fun place to BBQ. Roger
Those eggs cook awesome don't they!!!???

"If you come to a fork in the road, take it"
The client loves to cook and basically had me design and build the outdoor kitchen around the Egg. She loves cooking with it.
One of the design parameters was that the Egg gets very hot so that it needed airflow. We decided to not box it in and instead just build around it. I would probably have allowed for more room side to side.
Another poster was thinking of using this product in an outdoor shower, which I would not recommend. It is weather resistant but not waterproof.
You do know that the stuff is a siding, don't you?
Perhaps the next project would be matching the house to your "kitchen"?
Listen to what the boys here have to say about the flashing that goes with it...
using dryvit over backer board has never been an issue... over foam that has been glued to osb has... dryvit is nothing more than a very thick latex paint... it's like rubber coating whatever you apply it to... it can't and doesn't breath... like being in a plastic bag... and outdoor project such as his... doesn't need to breath... it doen't have moisture try'n to escape from inside... and since it's on backer board there is not alot to rot... yes flashing details were a problem on homes... but the main problem was no way to let mositure escape.... very common problem in old building that gid fine for 100yrs then someone does a weatherization "project/program seals em up all nice and tight... and then they have mold they never had before... they think something somewhere has to be leaking... when the fact that they stopped the air leaks is the root of the problem

btw nice project
Looks nice! I'd like an outside shower, maybe the dryvit would be nice for the walls.
Whats the difference between Dryvit and "one coat stucco products"?
I orginally went the one coat stucco route, but the client was not happy with the color selection. Off the shelf you have access to maybe 10 colors, and then you are responsible for mixing the color resulting in god knows what.
Dryvit is not stucco, it is an acrylic product with sand in it. I used Freestyle Dryvit which gives a smooth finish. You have about a hundred color choices and the color you pick is the color you end up with. Extremely easy to work with.
