We need to build a carport/garden structure which has a 20′ opening with hip roof above. The beam will be exposed — there’s no siding on the structure, just a lattice pattern out of 1X4s between 8X8 posts. Our local lumber dealer suggested a pressure treated Parallam beam. I’m a little concerned that the beam could delaminate over time. Has anybody used treated Parallam, or have any other suggestions for a beam that will be exposed to weather? I’m considering using a steel I-beam, but haven’t figured out how to cover it to make it match the rest of the structure. Thanks a lot for any input.
