Question:If code requires 8d nails every 24inches oc, can I nail every 16 or 20? So, basically can i just get in the ballpark and shoot away??? So really the question is, is there anything wrong with overnailing slightly.
What are your guys thoughts?????

Oh yeah I overnail all the time.
Sometimes we get specs. for 4" OC on the edge and 8" in the field. So I shoot'em off at 3 and 6.
I'm not messing around w/ trying to get them exact.
I do the same thing with drywall. I just eyeball a foot an screw it to it.
I should add that when we do have a nailing spec like that we have to use a 3x6 at every panel edge where the two sheets butt and any blocking needed on panel edges.
So I think as long as you're not getting too carried away it's just increasing the shear strength.

Building code is just the minimum that you can get by with. When you're talking structure and load, a few extra nails won't hurt a bit.
Thanks for the advice. I noticed my gun was 22 inches long, so if I shot a nail every guns length I should be covered. My rookie self was measuring and figured there really must be a better way. I was just worried my inspector would look down upon 'in the ballpark' nailing.
Thanks again
I usually do it by nail count. If nails are supposed to be 12" apart, then a four foot sheet gets 5 nails across.
