Can anyone give me any information on Ozone generators to purify indoor air? What are the best companies making these units. Has anyone had first hand experience with them? Thanks, Bill P.

I have an ozone generator to purify the water in my hot tub, in lieu of chlorination. It's a toxic gas, but after 20 minutes it's broken down into free oxygen. I've never heard of ozone as an air purifier. Be careful, I wouldn't want to breath the stuff.

Bill, follow Dave's advice and don't even think of getting an ozone generator for air purification. Inlation of ozone has very bad effects on your mucus membrans and can cause serious craking and drying of the skin. Ozone is a free radicle generating material and a powerful oxidizing agent, and could, in the long run, be carcinogenic. Continuous exposure for even short periods of time results in some pulmonary edema and possible chronic repiratory disease. ie. stick with the classic air filter or hepa filter.
*Bill, I highly recommend the ozone air purifiers. I have been using mine for several years. They are completly safe! They work the same as a thunderstorm which cleans and freshens the air. Ozone eliminates bacteria, chemicals in the indor environment, odors, fungus, etc. The ozone travels throughout the house at safe levels to do the purification. Standard air filters are limited to filtering the air in the space surrounding it. I recommend the Alpine Company. Feel free to contact me for more info.

Haven't they banned the ozone generators yet! Ozone is great for keeping the cosmic rays in check but that's up in the ozonosphere (not the real name).
#1 constituant of smog = ozone.
I haven't seen any research one way or the other and would like to. For now I'll stear clear. I build houses for people who have chemical sensitivities. They and their doctors say stay away from Oxonators.

Are you referring to ionizing air purifiers? I saw a demonstration of one in operation. The air is drawn through them fast enough to be felt. But, there are no moving parts! The purified air smells like a "thunder storm". I think they work by attracting airborn pollutants to charged metallic rods. Somebody on this board with a background in physics could probably give a better explanation.
*The air is drawn through two electrically charged plates. The high potential creates O3 (ozone) from the O2 (oxygen) in the air. This material is unstable and decomposes almost as soon as it is generated. As long as it is present as O3, then it is a strong oxidizing agent and at concentrations greater than 2 parts per million, will cause serious health problems. It does purify the air by killing any bacteria present but it does nothing to remove the dust, or anything else, from the air, except for the very small amount which develops a static electrical charge and ends up sticking to the electrical plate inside the generator. This static effect is why dust sticks to the face of your TV set. The face of the glass develops a static charge as a result of the electrons hitting the back side of the tube, away from the viewer. Save the money and watch more TV if you want to remove dust and dirt from the air by this method..
