I am replacing windows in a house and have removed the existing aluminum siding. I was going to trim the windows out with 3/4 inch pine painted to match the wood soffit and fascia. How much should I pack out the window trim, so I can slip the siding behind the window trim. I would rather do this then put up j- channel around the windows. The reason why the windows we ordered, the casings are just too thin to look good without some type of trim around them.

Dana,
I don't much like vinyl siding, but I do know a bit about it. You only need to pack out the trim 3/4" to let the siding in behind it. BUT is this really what you want to do? How will you prevent water from getting back there? Especially the top. Even "J" channel leaks, no J will surely leak. Am I missing something?
One more question, why take the time and $ to prime and paint pine. Does your client want the "semi-maintenence-free" look. Usually people want vinyl cuz they don't much care to pick up a brush ever again. I'd expect you to be wrapping the facia and window trim with coil stock.
If you did this, you could pack out your windows and bend your coil stock to wrap the trim, accomodate the siding and serve as window flashing as well.
Also, most windows can now be ordered with the J channel as part of the frame, built right into the window.
No matter what you do, just watch your flashing details closely. Vinyl siding is rough at best, but a poorly installed VS job is downright terrible.
I agree totally with Dieselpig. I do alot of vinyl around here ( because thats what the customer wants, not because I like it). I usually wrap the window trim with alum. and bend it so the J is built into the alum. Good clean job. I think Mike Guertin did an article about this subject not that long ago.
