Now that my son is entering high school and playing the guitar, I have decided to do a minimal basement renovation so that he and his friends will be out of the way. I plan to (a) re-paint the concrete floor and cinder block walls, (b) rebuild the stairs, (c) put in some new electrical outlets, (d) install a whole lot of shop lights (e) install some cheap storage cabinets and (f) partition off the furnace area with folding doors. The one thing I can’t decide on is whether to paint the ceiling joists and the bottom of the first floor. The house is 80 years old and the beams and underlayment ceiling have acculmulated alot of dust. I have no interest in a drop ceiling or anything like it because I like the height that I have now, and I don’t mind the look of beams, let alone the open access. So my question is: should I or should I not paint the beams and the underlayment from the first floor? If I go with paint, do I spray paint? And if I spray paint, is there inexpensive spray painting equipment out there that I should know about?
