Hi All,
Well I am a big fan of oil primers for Int/Ext work and now with the removal of these products from the market next year I was wondering about stocking up. Any ideas on what the shelf life of oil based paints would be (never opened cans)? This is assuming climate controlled storage (65 -80F year round).
Thanks,
Chris

Never opened cans? I would say at least 10 years, especially if you turn each can upside down periodically (say every 3-4 months). That will keep the pigments from collecting at the bottom of the can.
I would get one of those small mixers for your drill. That's the best way to stir paint that has sat for a long time.
Also, store the paint someplace where the cans won't rust.
If it were me, I wouldn't worry about stocking up. The coatings industry has had their chemists busy for at least 10-15 years changing forumlations to meet ever tougher VOC regs. By the time alkyd is gone, the new stuff will probably be just as good -- and maybe better -- than the old stuff.
I just went thru about 40 cans of latex. Some were 13 yo and some were 25 yo.
Some had been opened and some had not.
About 10 were good. Both ages and opened/not.
It seemed that the fuller cans and those that had not been opened fared best.
I used 2 of the 25 yo cans.

Gee Sam, hope my stockpile in the basement doesn't look like yours. 25 years is a looooong time.
