In the article Paint Wars in the Feb/Mar 1999 issue of Fine Homebuilding, Zachary Gaulkin recommends use of a paintable water repellent and preservative on bare wood before priming. Does anybody know where to get something like this? Everything I see (Thompsons etc) doesnt say anything about paintable.

I believe the DAP product is paintable, and says so. I have used it with good adhesion, I can check on the specific product name when I get home.
*DAP Woodlife is paintable. Many of the other wood preservatives use parrafin as a water proofing ingredient. If they are paintable, they usually require a waiting period before application ....... read the label.
*There's a PPG product called Permanizer Plus, I believe, that acts like a consolidator and primer combination for bare wood. I've used it on older exterior trim, and it's worked well so far in that the paint has kept integrity.
