Hi All,
Some of the random plank floors in our 1850’s farmhouse were painted by the previous owners. And now they peel and scuff paint off very easily. My question is what went wrong here and how would you fix this problem?
Beyond that, should wide plank floors or any kind of wood floors ever be painted? Can paint be a durable finish on a floor?
Thanks,
Dave

If the paint blisters and peels easily, it could be moisture coming up through the boards.
Personally, I think a painted floor, with wear patterns, looks neat.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
espo, whats under those floors? Subfloor, basement, crawl?

Calvin,
Thanks for the reply, they are 2nd floor rooms, just diagonal plank sheathing for a sub floor...They would look nice enough if the paint didn't come off if you slid a chair etc...Dave
Do you have any idea of the type of paint or prep? For example might they have use latext wall paint over waxed floors?
My guess is they didn't properly prepare the surface. If the floor is c.1850's, then there is a good chance there is wax on the boards. No paint will stick to wax, even if they used proper floor paint.
If this is the case, it's very difficult to completely remove the wax from the flooring. You may have to end up sanding or stripping the paint and look at a different finish.
dave, it does sound like poor prep could be the cause of paint failure. Floor sanding?Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.
