One of the panels was cracked, so I took the door down and stripped off all the paint. Then I clamped the parts together the way Norm advised (http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/asktoh/question/0,,734356,00.html?order=DESC&expand_all=true&page=1) and am ready to paint.
In what order are the panels, rails, and stiles painted? (The door is still lying on horizontal supports, so “top” and “bottom” isn’t relevant.)
More importantly: How do I prevent paint from seeping into the joints, since that is what caused the panel to crack in the first place? I always use Penetrol with oil-based paints, but it occurs to me that Penetrol might allow the paint to flow into the joints.
(I wouldn’t have posted a question that has probably been asked and answered before, but for some reason I am having trouble accessing FHB articles online.)
Thank you,
Janet

I paint the edges of the panels and the trim srronding them, followed by the pannels, then he rails, then the stiles.
Don't know if it's right or not, but it works for me.
I remember you
The bigger problem with panel doors is that you paint them, then the panel shrinks and you have an unpainted band along the edge of the panel.
