The brick around the exterior of our fireplace is painted. What type of paint should we use to re-paint it. We are worried about heat and the effect it would have.

It seems to me that they make a paint just for those types of applications. Try contacting your local Devoe paint co. Or Duron Paint co. either should be able to help.
When I paint those areas I just use good oil based bonding primer, like coverstain, then follow up with a good quality oil s.g. finish coat. The heat is not as much of an issue as is black build up from the wood burning. If the unit is gas you should have very little to worry about. Do not paint the fire box area.
