I watched a kitchen renovation show where the guy had custom cabinets made. They were made out of melamine with poplar face frames and poplar rails to hold screws for hanging. He hung them unpainted, then a painter came along and sprayed them in place. He also sprayed all around the inside to catch the rail in back. Will the paint stick to Melamine? It was a nice system if it works.

Well, melamine in that form is a type of plastic, so anything with enough "bite" to stick to plastics ought to do ok.
I know of a small shop that has used automotive paints to differing success (the laquer sometimes too hot for the thinnest melamine paper veneers.
I know of a remodeler who has good success with Krylon, but they have not worked on any of the newest paper-thin veneers yet to my knowledge.
You can get melamine veneer in a pretty good range of colors, but, you have to plan out how to do the lamination (which can be more complicated than just having s vacuum bag amachine).
use melamine paint, it's avail almost everywhere now ..
