Help! I have just discovered that our painter has painted over the “growth chart” lovingly inscribed on a door frame for the past 14 years. We are currently living 2000 miles away and I neglected to transfer the information to paper before we left. I am just sick about this…does anyone have any ideas of how I can get two layers of paint off the wall without damaging the info under them. Thanks for any ideas….the area was just painted 24 hours ago. Thanks again.

You might try calling the tech number for the paint manufacturer and seeing what they have to say. What was the info underneath the paint written in? If it was permanent marker, you may be able to get it back somehow....
Thanks very much...I called a rep and they suggested I use methyl hydrate or gas line anti-freeze, applying it sparingly until the image underneath begins to show through...apparently you can just barely make out the information in some areas. So all is not lost...I hope! There is only one layer of latex paint over the information not two as I previously thought. And no, it was not in permanent marker.
I hope you get it back - please let us know how it works out. We recently transferred my daughter's growth chart to a piece of painted canvas that will travel with us if we move for just that reason. Of course, we only had one kid and 3 years worth of marks to do, so it was pretty easy.
I bet you are out of luck, but can use this lesson for others. My parents lost two decades of "data" the same way. we keep our kid's records on a 6' molding of beech, and their friends' measurements, wish we had chosen a 7' length, they're all over six feet now!
