I need some input on whether or not to paint OSB (used for the inside walls of a shed). Guy at the paint store says not to do it because it can trap moisture.
Does anybody have thoughts on this.

Paint it if you want to. I see no problems at all.
*I painted the interior of my shed (OSB) with exterior satin paint and it still looks good after 15 years.
*I had to laugh--the guy whose job depends on whether or not his store sells paint is suggesting that you not buy any paint. OSB is made of wood, as is much of the siding and exterior and interior trim on most houses. Does he advocate not painting siding and trim as well?
*Hey Bill, good call!Nick, Go ahead and paint it but I'd seal it with a good primer first (Kilz, etc). If you don't that OSB will soak up paint like theres no tomorrow and you'll be rolling on several more coats than you would like.Mike
*Paint it. I am in the process of painting the OSB interior sheathing of my woodshop. I used a water based primer in one room, and found that the adhesive or the resin in some of the wood chips bled through it, even though the primer was a "sealing" primer allegedly capable of preventing this. The stain came through the high hiding power white latex top coat as well. I am now sing an alkyd primer in the other room, because it seems to seal what ever is bleeding though more effectively. The other reason that I am switching to alkyd priming is that the latex primer seemd to "raise the grain" of the OSB to the point that the surface was considerably rougher after painting than before. Some of the wood flakes lifted right off the surface. Good thing it's a barn not a piano.
*I could never figure out what a water based primer was supposed to seal. I've never found it capable of sealing anything.jim l
*Thank you all for the vote of confidence. I thought I was loosing it when the guy was explaining to me why not to paint it.Prime and paint it is!
*There are two sides to a sheet of OSB.You will probably install the SLICK side facing the interior. If so, seal with a good alkyd primer first. Then paint with any top coat you like.If you are installing ROUGH side facing interior, it is gonna take a lot of primer. An alkyd is best here too, but Zinsser brand Bullseye 1-2-3 works well. Top coat with whatever you like.James DuHamel
