Hi All,
Painting a small kitchen in a couple of days, with existing semi-gloss on the walls. I want to clean any grease and gunk off the walls and am planning on using TSP for this purpose. The paint color will remain the same, but was wondering that since I am TSPing the walls, do I still need to primer the walls before putting on a fresh coat of semi-gloss? I’d like to ensure good adhesion from the old paint to the new and wanted to know if primer over a TSP’ed wall is over kill.
Thanks,
Tark

I'm not a professional painter, so you might want to wait for a more informed opinion, but I've painted over semi-gloss after only washing with tsp and had no adhesion problems. As long as coverage isn't a problem due to color or shade issues, I don't think priming is necessary. You might give it a light sanding if you're worried the existing surface is too glossy, though the tsp seems to dull the surface to some degree. I do spot prime over repairs.
