I’m painting our living room a vivid orange/red. I was warned that it would take more coats than another color would. I just finished the third coat and I’ll need at least another. I didn’t prime first because the walls were previously painted white. If I had, would the red have covered in three (or even two?) coats?

My rep. recomends priming with grey before using the deep colored finishes.

I've seen pink primer under red.
Grey, huh. I wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks a bunch. That's helpful to know.
I always buy my paint from a reputable, professional paint store and do what they tell me to. Definitely would have used a tinted primer.
I've always been led to use a 1/4 formula for the primer. And reds required something special - I think the grey comment is right.
